Space Invaders Clock or The Time My Boys Drove Me Crazy!

So the boys room, I bet you thought I had forgotten about it. No but I had run out of inspiration, motivation and cash! So it was put on hold for a bit.

Then I got this clock blank while I was away for $2 and knew what to do.

I cut a space invader out on my Zing (cutting machine)

I went shopping for clock mechanism and they were $30..um insane so I bought a $3 clock and pulled it apart and used the mechanism from that - Warning don't be tempted to use your hands, the slightest bend in the clock hands will render it useless (learned the hard way on a previous attempt) I used a pair of pliers and gently pried the hands off.

I attached it to the back and there you go a custom clock and for $5.

DIY Delight or disaster? I like it, cheap, quick, easy! What's not to love? I'll tell you what's not to love, ticking apparently. I went in the boys room and noticed it missing from the wall. I panic looking around for it when I note the eye movement happening between the boys. So I demanded to know where it was, Samuel pulls it out of the closet and said, "it ticks....LOUD" Me "You have to be kidding me" Samuel, "no it's really cool, what if we just remove the battery". Smack my head, really! So for them Disaster!!

Thanks for reading,

Mel xo

  1. Bwahahaha...oh that is hilarious!!! I love it, you're so clever thinking of getting a cheapy clock and using the mechanism. I have looked at clock bits at Spotlight and always put them back cos they're too expensive - now I know exactly what to do. Gabe is learning time and I have a great idea lined up - thanks hun!

  3. You took things apart?!?! I am impressed. Well, ok, impressed that you took it apart but that you were able to put it back together. I am really good at the taking apart but not so much the putting back together. This looks like the perfect addition for a gaming room. Job well done!

  5. How clever are you, to take a cheap clock and use the components from it. Love it! Sad that it's such a loud ticker! Tell the boys to just get used to it. eventually they won't notice.

  6. Very cool, Mel! I must get a cutter :-) The mechanisms over here are super cheap, but that was good thinking on your side to use a cheap clock! Delight !

  7. I too have used a cheap clock for the mechanism, insane the prices on them otherwise! I love your clock, but I have had that happen when I've made something thinking the kids will love it and it hasn't gone to plan! xx

  8. Hehehe...they put it in the closet!! I was completely obnoxious until my parents relented and got us (me) an Atari and I played Space Invaders for HOURS on our crappy old black-and-white TV. Best game ever. Except for Ms. Pac Man and Adventure. =D

It's awesome - not a disaster at all - but I have to agree with them - the ticking of clocks drive me batty lol

  10. Well I think this clock is AWESOME!! I'm going to pin it to make my girls custom clocks when they get their own bedrooms. Fortunately we have ceiling fans on constantly at our house which drowns out the sounds of ticking clocks!! :)

  11. Well, it looks really neat! You did a great job. Too bad it ticks really loudly. We have a clock in our playroom. Whenever my parents visit and stay in there the clock goes missing...it is really loud. Oh well, right? Thanks so much for linking up at the Real Family Fun link party! Hope to see you next week.

  12. Love it! What a great idea! I hadn't ever considered making a custom clock before - and with a cutting machine, the possibilities are endless!

I actually really like the sound of ticking clocks. I find them soothing. Is that weird?

  13. Very clever Mel (as usual)! Love the idea and how it has turned out. You have great ideas and projects. Love them. I must admit, when a clock ticks constantly and you have noticed it once, you just can't think of anything else but how to un-focus yourself from it or how to get rid of it. So, sorry but I can't blame the boys :-) Amy of While Wearing Heels, you are funny and what you've said about pulling things apart but not necessarily being able to put them together again is somewhat familiar :-)

  15. Oh so funny, ticking too loud!! That is just too cute, but it really sounds like the boys wanted to please you, if only for the ticking! How ingenious to take a cheaper clock apart! THAT is what I call upcycling at it's best. What a delight, Mel ~ Amy

  16. Oh that is a riot! But how cute they didn't want to hurt your feelings! A ticking clock drives me bonkers if I can hear it! I had a friend in Montana who always told me when I had a problem or a craft fail, "Well...buy yourself something pretty and say you tried!"

  17. LOL on the ticking!! Your boys sound sweet. The clock is very nice!

I had a pendulum clock for the dining room that I took right back because the ticking was driving me nutso.

  18. The loud ticking is too funny, but the clock is genius- great idea to buy a cheap-o clock for parts. I had a couple of clock projects that got put on hold because I didn't want to spend the money on parts. Thanks, girlie!

  19. Using a $3 clock instead of buying the mechanism from a craft store is brilliant! The boys hiding it so they don't have to listen to it is hilarious. Note to self - Find QUIET cheap clock for the parts!

  20. Great idea even though the ticking was too loud for a bedroom. Lol.

  21. Again, another awesome idea. I have an old clock in the living room that is so loud. But we never notice the ticking (except for now) cuz you kinda just get used to it....(except for now) Cheers!!
